National Highways has appointed Marshel Weerakone as chief of staff for the Lower Thames Crossing.

Mr Weerakone has spent over seven years at National Highways, having started at the beginning of 2019 as a project manager for the strategic road operator.

He subsequently worked his way through positions including senior programme manager, head of national programmes and head of scheme delivery framework before he took on his new role on the £10.6bn river crossing.

Prior to joining National Highways, he spent over six years working at Atkins, having joined the company as a graduate highways asset management and operations engineer.

He then became an assistant highways asset management and operations engineer, before taking on the role of project manager for highways asset management and operations for his last year and a half with the company.

Commenting on the new position, Mr Weerakone said: ‘It's been a brilliant few years delivering across Operations via SDF and getting the business ready for SDF2. I'm incredibly proud of the thousands of wide-ranging schemes we've delivered and grateful to everyone from NH and supply chain partners who have been part of that journey.

‘Looking forward to the new challenge at LTC and helping deliver the UK's largest road tunnel - exciting times ahead!'
