AtkinsRéalis has been appointed as the sole provider for a £96m professional engineering services contract for Herefordshire Council.

Under the deal, AtkinsRéalis will provide a range of services, including highway and active travel design, bridge inspections, flood modelling, and environmental and heritage assessments, as well as project management, transport planning and consultancy support for major schemes.

Running from 6 April 2026, the contract has an initial term of five years, until 5 April 2031, but allows for five possible one-year extensions, bringing the end date to 5 April 2036.

AtkinsRéalis was one of 11 companies to submit a tender. Herefordshire stated that 10 made it through to the final stage, with the Canadian company beating out nine other firms.

Mike Batheram, market director for local transport at AtkinsRéalis, said: ‘Herefordshire Council emphasised the importance of taking a collaborative approach for this newly created role, as they seek to develop a long-term relationship for the delivery of professional services, working alongside the term maintenance provider and other contractors and suppliers, to deliver highways schemes and provide infrastructure services.

‘Our commitment to developing the partnership was key to our appointment in this role, which represents a fantastic opportunity to bring our multidisciplinary expertise to Herefordshire to support the council's ambitions for sustainable growth and improved transport infrastructure. We look forward to building a long-term relationship with the Council, other partners and stakeholders that delivers real benefits for local communities.'

Local teams will deliver on the contract for AtkinsRéalis, building on a similar model used by the company with local authorities such as Wiltshire, Buckinghamshire and Surrey.
