Balfour Beatty has launched a survey of frontline road workers to help better understand the abuse these industry champions face on a daily basis.

Launched on 1 June and running until 3 July, the UK-wide survey is focused on understanding:

  • The frequency and nature of abuse experienced by roadworkers
  • The risks and near-misses they encounter
  • Where current safety measures are working – and where more needs to be done

Once collected, the company hopes to use the findings to shape its activity during Roadworker Safety Week, a new initiative being launched to coincide with this year's Road Safety Week (16-22 November).

Led by organisations from across the sector, including National Highways, contractors such as Balfour Beatty and local authorities, the week looks to raise awareness of the risks that road workers are facing, drive behavioural and cultural change among road users, encourage stronger enforcement and policy action and help highlight practical interventions already making a difference on the nation's roads. As the inaugural event, this year's initiative plans to focus on road worker abuse.

With the results of the survey set to be published during Roadworker Safety Week, the initiative is also expected to include a national launch event, demonstrations of safety measures such as body-cams and conflict management approaches, industry-led sessions and engagement with MPs, police and other key stakeholders.

With not much time until the survey closes, be sure to submit your responses here.

Another great way to support those working on the front lines is to nominate them for a Highways Champions Award. Taking place on 4 November, the event offers the industry the chance to celebrate those who have demonstrated exceptional skill, brilliance, selflessness, bravery and ingenuity.

The deadline to submit nominations is midnight tonight, so be sure to enter here before it's too late!
