National Highways has appointed Navtech Radar to a £2.3m 'interim' stopped vehicle detection (SVD) maintenance contract.
The deal – which is not expected to be signed until 19 August at the earliest – will cover a period from 1 September to 31 August 2027.
Under the contract, Navtech will provide support and maintenance services for the radar part of the SVD system.
SVD radar is used on smart motorways to help automatically identify halted vehicles in live lanes to 'alert traffic control centres', so they are able to close lanes, warn other drivers, and dispatch help.
Navtech was given this contract as a direct award from National Highways. The strategic roads operator previously stated that the company's intellectual property rights exclude any alternative bidder.
