Kent County Council (KCC) has announced the trial of a new active travel app in Gravesend to help people get more walking, wheeling and cycling into their daily lives.
Developed with the help of Active AI, WeRoam aims to encourage those over the age of 16 to switch from short car journeys to more active methods of travel through the use of smart activity tracking, personalised prompts and community features.
Users will be able to create or join groups, whether they be focused on walking to school, cycling to work or neighbourhood walks, which KCC hopes will encourage people to get more active together.
This pilot is being supported by partners including Gravesham Borough Council, Active Kent & Medway, the Gurdwara, One You Kent, Cyclopark, local retailers, Explore Kent, community groups and local volunteers.
Spencer Dixon, deputy cabinet member for highways and transport, said: ‘WeRoam is about making active travel easy, social and enjoyable. Whether you're walking to the shops or cycling to an appointment, these short journeys can make a huge difference to your health. We're excited to see how Gravesend residents use the app and support each other to move more.
‘Importantly, the more people who use it during this pilot, the better evidence we'll have to explore rolling WeRoam out across the whole of Kent.'
The pilot runs from 26 January for up to six months, with the app available to download from the Apple App Store or Google Play. More information on this pilot scheme can be found here.
