Transport Scotland plans to appoint Wills Bros to carry out the fifth phase of the A9 Dualling scheme between Pitlochry and Killiecrankie thanks to a £220m investment from the Scottish Government.

While still in its standstill period, once signed, the £205m contract (excluding VAT) will see Wills Bros dual the 6.4km stretch of the A9. Transport Scotland expects that, with the completion of this contract, 50% of the A9 between Perth and Inverness will be a dual carriageway by 2030.

The tender notice stated that the contract is expected to last for just shy of nine years.

The scheme also aims to support 60 new full-time equivalent jobs, including 17 graduate positions, 11 apprenticeships, and eight new entrant positions.

Cabinet secretary for economy, tourism and transport, Stephen Flynn, said: ‘This contract award marks another significant milestone in the Scottish Government's £3.97 billion investment to dual the A9.

‘This is an investment in Scotland's future. Alongside delivering a safer and more resilient A9, this contract will create jobs, develop skills, provide opportunities for local businesses and invest directly in the communities it serves.

‘By continuing to invest in the A9, we are improving connections between communities, supporting economic growth across the Highlands and helping to build the infrastructure Scotland needs to prosper for generations to come.'

If appointed, this would mark the second section of the A9 scheme that Wills Bros have been awarded; in July 2025, the Irish firm was appointed to the fourth section between Tay Crossing and Ballinluig, with the contract valued at £152.7m.

Advanced works are already being carried out along this section of the A9 to prepare the site for the main bulk of the work.
