National Highways has announced a £6m package of improvements expected to be implemented on the A46 north of Bath between the London Road roundabout junction and the Cold Ashton roundabout over the next few months.

This scheme, which includes new road surfaces, better signage, new chevrons at Hartley Bends and upgraded drainage, is expected to begin work on 18 January, with the national road authority carrying out ground surveys and installing monitoring equipment at Charmy Downs.

Phases two and three are then expected to come later in 2026, bringing drainage improvements at Four Winds Farm and resurfacing at Hartley Bends.

Sean Walsh, National Highways route manager, said: ‘More than 20,000 drivers use this route every day for work, home deliveries and the movement of goods and services, so it's essential we continue to provide the essential maintenance and upgrades needed to make sure journeys remain safe and reliable.'

As part of these works, there will be some road closures put in place to ensure the safety of workers and road users.

Between 18 January and 20 March, there will be overnight closures (8pm – 6am) in both directions between Cold Ashton roundabout and London Road junction roundabout, with signed diversions in place.

National Highways has stated it will maintain access to properties on the A46 directly within the closure.

During the same period, there will be lane closures on the three-lane section of the A46 at Charmy Down. One lane will be running in each direction with contraflow in place.
