The transport modelling company TSS says the industry has moved from local to city-wide and corridor-wide models which is a "big change" for the industry.Company president Alex Gerodimos told Smart Highways editor Paul Hutton that the modelling initially focused on private vehicles with public transport being added as they went along, but nowadays we talk about car sharing, on-demand transportation services, bike sharing and pedestrians, which means a shift of modelling of individual modes to modelling of mobility."These are major changes," he explained, "and we have been required to expand what we know about things to think not only about the supply and capacity but also the demand and how people change their decisions about what time to leave for work, what mode to choose, how to modify that decision because of changing circumstances... we've been forced to provide answers in real time".In a wide ranging interview he discussed how people use real-time information, the environment, the accuracy of the modelling and providing multi-modal advice.You can hear this enlightening interview here:[audio mp3="http://smarthighways.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/alex-tss.mp3"][/audio]
