M1 barrier upgrade awarded to bmJV

Joint venture bmJV, consisting of BAM Nuttall and Morgan Sindall, has been awarded a £35 million barrier renewal works package on the M1.

Awarded under the Highways Agency’s National Major Projects Framework, the barrier renewal work will replace the existing life expired barrier and facilitate a future smart motorway scheme along this stretch of road.

The project will be replacing over 12 miles of existing steel safety barrier with a slip-formed concrete barrier between junctions 19 to 16.

This work will be carried out in conjunction with strengthening and stabilising of the hard shoulder to accommodate new drainage and communication systems in the central reserve.

Gary Crisp, highways director at bmJV, said: “We are delighted to be continuing our collaborative partnership with the Highways Agency to improve the existing road network and shorten journey times for road users. bmJV is an established joint venture which is already successfully delivering other Highways Agency projects, including the M62 from junctions 25 to 30, M62 junctions 30 to 32 and M1 junctions 39 to 42.”

The work is due to take place between August 2014 and June 2015.
