Staffordshire County Council has urged drivers not to attempt to drive through closures as it completes a £1.25m scheme to reconstruct and resurface a strategically important gateway into Burton.
The works to the A5121 Derby Road include repairs to ironwork, the replacement of traffic detection sensors, damaged signs, bollards and other street furniture, and refreshing road markings.
The highway authority said the job is on track to be completed by 28 June after the road closed for a week at the end of April for drainage and preparation work.
It added that, weather permitting, overnight road closures will now be in place until 28 June so surfacing works can be undertaken with ‘minimal disruption’.
Daytime works will continue using traffic signals or lane narrowing, and crews may work through the weekend where needed.
‘For everyone’s safety, road users must not attempt to drive through road closures or onto grass verges to avoid them. This is incredibly dangerous and completely unacceptable,’ the council said.
Mark Deaville, the council’s cabinet member for strategic highways, said: ‘We are now entering into the final stretch of phase one of our major Derby Road project.
‘This road is a strategically important gateway into Burton so many residents, businesses and other road users will notice the world of difference when travelling along this newly surfaced route.’
Cllr Deaville added: ‘These works have, inevitably, caused some disruption but please be assured that our crews are pulling out all the stops to minimise this by finding the safest and most efficient way of getting them done.
‘Road closures are in place for everyone’s safety and abusive behaviour towards our highways staff will not be tolerated under any circumstances.’
Phase 2 of the £2.5m A5121 Derby Road Structural Maintenance Works is due to take place in 2025-26.
