Highways has teamed up with Balfour Beatty and sector leaders to help tackle road worker abuse.
In a spirit of collaboration, we hope to build momentum behind a campaign to create a range of support tools and guidance for our sector and frontline colleagues. We want to give them as much as help as we can, and above all, to let them know - we will always do our best to support them.
Worker abuse is all too common on our roads. Road sector staff have a right to carry out their jobs in a safe environment, free from verbal or physical intimidation. Sadly, around 80% of road workers say they have been abused at least once a month - an unacceptable situation that affects both individuals and the reputation of the sector.
It is also contributing to a mental health crisis: the occupation has one of the highest suicide rates in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics, with one in four roadworkers suffering from poor mental health
This is why Highways and Balfour Beatty brought together a wide range of stakeholders to discuss how we can better protect and serve our frontline colleagues.
Please watch this short video introducing the campaign and please get in contact and lend your support.
