The Department for Transport (DfT) has advertised the role of a 'director general for transport strategy'.
The new role, currently not part of the DfT's organisation chart, is designed to provide strategic leadership across a ‘multi-modal and cross-cutting portfolio’ and has responsibility for a range of themes including transport strategy, science, AI, data and decarbonisation agendas.
The DfT described the role as working closely with the secretary of state in ‘shaping the future of transport’, with the department currently working on creating an integrated national transport strategy.
Any candidate for the role is expected to have experience in developing and implementing strategies, with delivery both within and beyond their own organisation.
Experience in innovating through the use of data as part of a senior leadership team within a ‘complex operating environment’ is also required.
They will also need to be an ‘excellent leader of people’ who can improve capability, lead across boundaries, build a diverse, inclusive and multi-disciplinary team and empower and guide staff successfully through ‘significant change and in the face of significant external scrutiny’.
Once successful, the new director general can expect a salary of £130,000 per annum. The application deadline for this role is 20 September 2025.
