Chief executive of National Highways Nick Harris has announced that he is stepping down after 'a short transition period'.
Mr Harris sent an email, seen by Highways, to National Highways colleagues making the announcement.
He wrote: 'After five years in the role, and with the next Road Investment Strategy period approaching, this feels like the right time for a change – both for me personally, and for the organisation as it enters its next phase.
'National Highways means so much to me; the last five years have been defined by your hard work, dedication, and belief in the importance of what we do for the country. Together, we've strengthened the organisation, delivered major improvements and set ourselves up for long-term success. Thanks to all of you, National Highways is in great shape and ready for the years ahead.'
Mr Harris said some of the biggest achievements of his tenure were improvements in safety, performance and customer service, as well as the organisations becoming more resilient, efficient and innovative.
'We have prepared the organisation well for the future – one that will demand adaptability, partnership, and continued focus on our people and our customers,' he concluded.
Heidi Alexander, Transport Secretary, said: 'I want to recognise Nick Harris's contribution to National Highways over the past five years. My Department will work with the Board to ensure a smooth transition to new executive leadership, as we continue our joint work to improve and maintain our major road network.'
The Board will shortly appoint an interim CEO, who will cover the period during which a formal search for a permanent Chief Executive will run.
