Gloucester roundabout plans given go ahead

Major improvements at busy Gloucester roundabouts will go ahead after the Government approved the county council’s bid for cash.

In March, Gloucestershire County Council applied for £2.2million of 'pinch point' funding from the Department of Transport to tackle the serious congestion issue at the A38 and A417 at the C&G and Walls roundabouts in the Barnwood area.

The DfT has now confirmed that the council has been granted the money for this work to go ahead.

Cllr Will Windsor Clive, cabinet member for planning and infrastructure, said: "This is great news, I'm extremely pleased the government agreed with the importance of this scheme and granted us the money.

"The congestion at the C&G and Walls roundabouts is a real issue for drivers and is having an impact across Gloucester.

"This is another major part of the council's work to help boost local businesses and protect local jobs."

The scheme will cost £3.1million in total with the remaining balance shared between Gloucestershire County Council and Sainsbury's contributions.

Improvements include changes to the junctions, widening of lanes, more flexible traffic light systems and extra lanes.
