HE hails new in-house way of working in northern England

Highways England is hailing a new asset delivery approach in Cumbria and North Lancashire, and the North East of England as a brand new way of working will help improve journeys for customers.



The new in-house approach to maintenance and delivery is now in place following the end of the existing managing agent contracts, held by Kier and A-one+, on 31 March and means more than 140 people will join Highways England from the existing supply chain bringing what HE calls, “A wealth of knowledge with them into their new roles."

It will see Highways England taking more ownership of investment decisions and increasing its intelligence on local factors that influence where work is needed. Highways England will be directly co-ordinating roadworks, identifying schemes, managing severe weather and co-ordinating incident response. .

Highways England operations director, Nick Harris, said, “This is a massive achievement for Highway England – this new delivery method is symbolic of our commitment to continually driving improvement in how our roads are maintained, improved and operated, so that we can provide the best possible quality of service to our customers.

“We are looking forward to working collaboratively with our new colleagues from the supply chain over the coming months and years, and believe that this approach will benefit all parties, from the supply chain through to drivers on our roads.”
