Women get top jobs at Skanska and Conway

25/05/2017 | HIGHWAYS REPORTERS

Two women have been promoted to senior positions in large infrastructure firms after working their way up in their respective companies.

Following the recent appointment of Gregor Craig as president and CEO of Skanska UK, the company announced that Katy Dowding has been appointed executive vice president.

Ms Dowding (left) will fill Mr Craig’s previous role, taking executive responsibility for Skanska’s building operations, including SRW engineering services.

She joined Skanska in 2003 and for the past five years has been managing director of its facilities management business and a member of Skanska UK’s senior management team.

Mr Craig said, "Katy enhances the breadth and depth of the executive management team even further, bringing to it her extensive experience of the industry and senior management."

The company also announced a number of other senior level appointments, which take effect on 1 June.

FM Conway has appointed Liz Garvey (right) as HR director to bolster its approach to training and recruitment and help tackle the construction skills gap.

In what is a new position, Ms Garvey will oversee the company’s skills and training programme, with an emphasis on attracting a broad talent pool to the business and developing its in-house learning and development programme.

Ms Garvey said, "The Construction Industry Training Board estimates that our sector needs to recruit over 35,000 workers every year between now and 2021 to meet the UK’s development needs. This is a serious challenge requiring a proactive approach to seek out new talent."

Joanne Garwood, central services director at FM Conway, added, "This appointment reflects the critical importance of our people to our business. Liz has already been a driving force behind investment in our skills programme and in her new role will now take full charge of our strategy to recruit, train and retain the best talent."

Ms Garvey is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and joined FM Conway as head of HR in 2011. She previously held senior roles at a leading housing association and digital commerce specialist Pitney Bowes.
