KCC launches transport plan

Kent County Council (KCC) has launched a new transport plan which highlights key infrastructure developments across the region.

Priorities in Local Transport Plan 4: Delivering Growth without Gridlock 2016-2031 include:

• A new Lower Thames Crossing



• Port expansion at Dover Western Docks



• A solution to Operation Stack



• Splitting port traffic between the M2 and M20 for more efficient traffic management



• Provision for overnight lorry parking.

KCC cabinet member for environment and transport Matthew Balfour said: “This consultation is an opportunity for people and organisations within Kent to let us know their views and whether they agree with our priorities.

“This is one of our biggest plans and will shape the way we invest in our infrastructure up until 2031. The transport plan is vital to boost Kent’s economy and support a growing population which is expected to increase by 293,000 people in the next 15 years.

“With potential opportunities for devolution from government, now is the time for us to set out our plans and make clear what we want as a county.

“This plan will lay out what we will do to make sure transport is playing its part in making Kent a great place to live, work and do business.”

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has welcomed the plans. Natalie Chapman, head of policy for London and the South East, said: “The plan identifies a number of issues that FTA agrees should be a priority for Kent. Lorry parking is a problem throughout the country, but it is especially difficult for drivers approaching the Port of Dover to find a safe place to take their breaks.

“We need a decision on the Lower Thames Crossing and the accompanying improvements to the A2 as soon as possible. Plans for a lorry area at Stanford as an alternative to Operation Stack and the proposed traffic management on the motorways towards the port will all play a key role in keeping freight moving.”
