M4 Prince of Wales Bridge to close for overnight resurfacing

National Highways is advising that planned resurfacing works will mean the closure of the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge overnight at the end of April/beginning of May to complete the waterproofing and resurfacing of 1km of the bridge.

The westbound side of the bridge is planned to be closed on 27 April from 9pm-6am, with full overnight closures scheduled two nights from 1 May and one night on 6 and 8 May respectively (all 9pm-6am) to install narrow lanes and a contraflow, in preparation for eastbound resurfacing.

The contraflow will be in place from 7 May on 6am, in combination with a 40mph speed limit across the bridge. National Highways has confirmed that HGVs will be able to use both running lanes, including the contraflow lane.

For all of these planned closures, a ‘well-signed diversion’ will be put in place via the M48 Severn Bridge. However, the closure follows the recent announcement that the Prince of Wales Bridge will serve as the alternate route for HGVs over 7.5t which, from 27 May, will be unable to use the M48 Severn Bridge.

This is due to new weight restrictions that will be in place for 12-18 months to help prevent the further deterioration of the structure.
