Police anger as speed camera catches 2,200 drivers

A Buckinghamshire police chief has attacked drivers for ignoring a new 30mph limit - as new figures revealed more than 2,200 fines have been issued from a single speed camera since February.

But motorists have complained they were given no notice of the new limit on the A40 through Denham, with one driver saying roadwork signs had blocked the new 30mph signage from view.

After the limit was reduced from 50mph on February 9 more than 1,000 vehicles were clocked speeding by the camera over a 16-hour period. The total number of fines was counted last week at 2,209.

Chief inspector Gill Wootton said: “I am disappointed by the number of drivers that are evidently flouting the new speed limits in this area.

“This new speed limit was introduced by the local authority to reduce the risk of accidents and increase public safety, and it is unacceptable that people feel these speed limits do not apply to them.”

The new speed limit was put in by Buckinghamshire County Council after a pedestrian footbridge was damaged and had to be removed. Three lanes have been reduced to two and the temporary limit is to enable safe use of the pedestrian crossing.

Bucks County Council issued updates and warnings to drivers about the new limit on February 8, February 16 and March 10.

Transport boss Val Letheren said last month: “We want both pedestrians and road users to be safe and we hope that by sharing the results from the camera enforcement we will encourage motorists to slow down."
