Sixth edition of bitumen handbook published by Shell

A new handbook that is considered to be the definitive guide to asphalt paving technology has been released by Shell.

The sixth edition of the Shell Bitumen Handbook is authored by the company’s team of bitumen experts, led by John Read, general manager of bitumen technology.

According to Shell, it is used as a key reference by contractors and civil engineers around the world.

Read said: “This sixth edition is the biggest update we’ve ever done; with new concepts, practices and case studies, which we are sure our readers will benefit from. Along with new information and innovations, we hope that this reference guide will encourage all practitioners to adapt these technologies and practices in a safe and sustainable manner.”

The Shell Bitumen Handbook, first published in the UK in 1949 as the Mexphalte Handbook, has since, sold over 20,000 copies across 40 countries around the world.

“We invested time in keeping the handbook updated to help the industry we are proud to be a part of. It is our way of sharing best practice and to help readers stay informed,” adds John.

Shell has made a significant impact in spearheading numerous developments in bitumen technology including: clear bitumen, which allows for coloured asphalt surfaces; odourless bitumen; and also special grades of bitumen specially designed for heavy duty use, like in airport runways, ports, mining sites and racetracks.
