Staffordshire County Council has begun a £1.1m scheme to completely resurface a major road in Lichfield.
The work began on Monday (3 June) on the A5127 Birmingham Road between the junctions of St John Street and Green Hill.
In addition to resurfacing the full width of the carriageway, highways crews will replace ironwork and kerbing, repair drainage, and refresh road markings.
The council said the work is expected to take around seven weeks and will be carried out under daytime temporary traffic management.
Overnight road closures will be also required for carriageway resurfacing.
James Bailey, the council’s assistant director for highways and the built County, said: ‘Birmingham Road runs through the heart of Lichfield and – as with any busy carriageway – the volume of traffic has taken its toll on the road’s surface.
‘This is why the county council is investing over a million pounds to resurface the road as the summer brings us better weather. The result will be smoother journeys for people travelling through the area and I hope people will be pleased with the finish.'
The council also recently announced what it called ‘an £8m plan to double down on tackling potholes and drainage issues over the next year’.
It said this follows a surge in reports of road defects after the county endured one of the wettest and stormiest winters on record.
The council said the spending is on top of the £53m being spent on a range of major projects, vital road improvements and general road maintenance in 2024-25.
