£14m boost for Croydon road repairs

Roads across Croydon are in for a £14m facelift between 2013 and 2015 as part of the council's five-year programme to transform highways maintenance.

The capital expenditure of £7m for 2012/13, with an additional £862,000 grant from Transport for London, will be maintained until 2015, subject to the annual budget-setting process.

The investment programme will help repair the aggregated damage of three consecutive winters of severe weather that has had a significant impact on the condition of Croydon's roads, resulting in a backlog of maintenance work.

Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for environment and highways, said: "This programme of top-quality highways maintenance illustrates the council's commitment to regeneration of the borough, and to giving our residents a clean, safe and green environment in which to live and raise their children.

"These commitments have already commenced with the work we've undertaken in district centres - such as Purley, which was completed earlier this year, and Addiscombe, due for completion this summer - giving them a more welcoming atmosphere and improving conditions for residents and traders alike.

"The importance of keeping the borough's highways network in tip-top order can't be overstated - we have to keep motorists on the move and this maintenance programme marks a step change in approach that will deliver improved value for money."
