Amey will deliver highways services across Gloucestershire after being awarded a contract that could be worth up to £450 million.
The contract, which will run for five years with possible extensions up to 11 years, will be worth between £130million and £450million. The company will take responsibility for managing and maintaining Gloucestershire’s highway network – including nearly 10,000 km of roads, as well as providing winter maintenance services and delivering highway improvement schemes.
Amey already works closely with Gloucester City Council providing street scene services for local residents such as refuse and recycling collections, street cleaning, and grounds maintenance.
Mel Ewell, chief executive for Amey, said: “We are looking forward to further enhancing our services to the residents of Gloucestershire and will draw on our existing footprint in the local area along with our national highways experience to provide high quality, yet cost efficient services for the county. We will work closely with the council to help deliver their vision of providing a safe and sustainable transport network.”
Cllr Vernon Smith, the council’s cabinet member for highways, added: “The road network is a vitally important asset for our county which people care a great deal about.
“I am confident that in Amey we have appointed a highways contractor that will provide the quality services our county deserves as well as value for money for Gloucestershire’s tax payers. Thanks to the extra investment we've made in our roads and this new partnership, I expect Gloucestershire's network to go from strength to strength into the 21st century."
The new contract will start on 1 April 2014.
This year has seen Amey pick up six major highways contracts with Liverpool City Council, Transport Scotland, the New South Wales state government agency in Australia, the Queensland Government Department in Australia and ASC 6 and ASC 8 with the Highways Agency.
