Cambridge to extend 20mph limit across city

Residents in the south, west and central areas of Cambridge are set to be consulted on the roll-out of a city-wide 20mph speed limit.



The new speed limit has already been put in place in many roads to the north of the city as part of the first phase of the Cambridge City Council scheme.

A second phase which covers east Cambridge got the go-ahead from councillors after consultation showed support from residents.

In the north of the city residents have seen new road markings and signage displaying the new speed limit along their roads.

Cllr Kevin Blencowe, Executive Councillor for Planning Policy and Transport, said: “There’s strong evidence that a 20mph speed limit reduces the number and severity of accidents, noise and air pollution and reduces congestion by encouraging healthier ways of getting about like cycling and walking.

“For those reasons I am really pleased that residents have come out in support of the scheme during our consultation thus far. I think it’s a major improvement for these areas and eventually for the whole city.

“We are now keen to get on with the rolling out the benefits of 20mph to the south, west and central areas. Residents in those parts of the city can look forward to having their say in the coming months and I hope people take this opportunity to have their say.”

The city-wide 20mph scheme has a budget of £600,000.
