Construction continues at Pulpit Rock

19/11/2013 | HIGHWAYS REPORTERS

Additional overnight construction works are required on the £9.2m A82 Pulpit Rock Improvement scheme after work was stopped following a road traffic accident.

The incident occurred 1.5 miles to the south of the site last Wednesday (13 November) night. The contractor worked closely with the police and with the trunk road operating company to minimise disruption for road users and assist with the recovery of the vehicle. As a consequence, work for the night was cancelled at Pulpit Rock and all machinery had to be removed from the road.

Although the works were cut short by one night, the contractor had undertaken significant preparation work in the preceding nights to allow a pile concreting operation to take place on the night of the accident. This preparation work will now have to be repeated, and the works re-sequenced as a result.

To allow works to continue on schedule, and having consulted with the emergency services and Argyll & Bute Council, Transport Scotland has agreed to allow the Contractor to extend the overnight road closures programme by an additional five nights between Thursday 21 November and Monday 25 November. The road will reopen each day at 6am and close at 10pm each night during the works.

Dominic Murphy, Transport Scotland project manager, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank local communities and road users for their continued understanding and patience. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, we need to extend overnight road closures by five additional nights.

“Whilst the closures are unfortunate, we have a commitment to assist the emergency services in instances like this and we will continue to work with the contractor to ensure any inconvenience to road users is kept to a minimum.”

The closures will be put in place for the safety of road users and road workers, the A82 will be closed at Pulpit Rock, south of Ardlui, between 10pm and 6am each night.
