FM Conway invests in new gritters for Lewisham

FM Conway has invested £350,000 in four brand new gritters to service the London Borough of Lewisham.

The specialist vehicles will be permanently located at Lewisham Council’s depot on Wearside Road and, with a cold snap looming, will help keep the borough’s roads clear of snow and ice.

The gritters can quickly spread rock salt (also known as grit) on the borough’s roads to prevent snow and ice causing disruption and are all four wheel drive to tackle steep roads. The amount of grit deployed can be varied to tackle anything from light ice to thick snow cover. They are multi-purpose vehicles and will continue to work over the summer on highways services.

FM Conway delivers highways maintenance works for the borough and started a five-year contract in April 2014.

Councillor Alan Smith, Deputy Mayor of Lewisham, said: “I am delighted that FM Conway has expanded Lewisham’s fleet of winter vehicles. It shows the value of our partnership that FM Conway is willing to make such a significant investment in the smooth running and safety of our roads.”

Liam McCay, senior contracts manager at FM Conway, added: “We’re pleased to be able to assist Lewisham with its winter transport planning. It’s our job to keep the borough’s roads in the best possible condition and make sure they are open to residents year-round.”
