World-renowned graphic designer, Margaret Calvert OBE, best known for her work in partnership with Jock Kinneir, which radically changed the face of UK road signing in 1965, has a new exhibition of her designs and artwork, with works available to buy.
Ms Calvert’s exhibition, Roadworks, is at the Liminal Gallery, Margate until 13 April and has been supported by Buchanan Computing, which also helped her put on a display at the world-famous New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 2021.
If you fancy picking up an original Calvert, her works are on sale for as little as £300 at the exhibition, with 50% of sales donated to RBLI charity Tommy, which provides services and support to veterans.

Ms Calvert was a leading member of the team commissioned to redesign the road sign system in the 1960s, creating many of the iconic symbols used to this day including ‘Roadworks’, and ‘Children’, which have inspired her new exhibition in Margate.
The show includes three new signs created to her design. The accurate vector designs were recreated and exported to the required digital formats by Buchanan Computing using their SignPlot software – the UK’s leading traffic sign design system.
The company said in a statement that Ms Calvert’s ‘unusual take on a 20 mph speed limit sign required particular tweaking to change to the playful colour scheme Margaret had chosen and to fine-tune the spacing’.
Simon Morgan, chairman at Buchanan Computing said: ‘We were delighted to be working with Margaret again for this exciting exhibition. You can see from the photograph how delighted Margaret was with the result.’
