More schools get 20mph safety limits

Nine more Staffordshire schools will benefit from new permanent part time 20mph zones after a pilot project proved a success.
The scheme is being rolled out to schools that are on the county’s busiest roads and follows a trial which took place outside eight schools in Tamworth last spring.

All of the schools that piloted the part time permanent 20mph zones, as well as those that will launch the second phase, are on A and B roads.

County Councillor Mike Maryon, Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “The permanent part time 20mph zones have had a major impact on driver behaviour in Tamworth and I am delighted to announce that they will now be rolled out to a further nine schools across Staffordshire.

“Residents have told us that keeping their children safe is the top priority – and we have listened. We are determined to build on our excellent record of reducing the number of accidents on our roads and this high profile and effective campaign is just one way of achieving that goal.

“The highly innovative safety scheme follows on from the temporary 20mph speed indicator devices (sids), which have been visiting schools across Staffordshire since September 2010.

"By rolling the permanent part time 20mph zones out to schools on A and B roads we can increase the number of other schools that benefit from the SIDS so it is a win, win situation."
