The Highways Maintenance Efficiency Programme (HMEP) has launched a free, online asset management e-learning toolkit.
According to HMEP, the toolkit will provide a consistent way for staff working in local highway authorities to learn the essential, long-term planning skills needed to help deliver better roads and services, more efficiently.
The new online training system allows highway practitioners to learn in their own time, at their own pace, while generating a completion certificate in association with The Chartered Institution of Highways Transportation (CIHT).
Speaking on behalf of the Highways Maintenance Efficiency Programme (HMEP), Matthew Lugg, said: “Many local highway authorities have embraced asset management as a key enabler to make best use of their overall resources and deliver the right outcomes, but the awareness of this approach is often limited to a few people within an organisation.
“The HMEP asset management e-learning toolkit has been specifically designed to help embed an asset management culture across the whole organisation involved in delivering the highway maintenance service. In doing so, this helps to ensure everyone fully understands and supports the benefits of this approach.”
Sue Stevens, from The Chartered Institution of Highways Transportation (CIHT), said: “CIHT believes that asset management is at the heart of providing the transport networks that people need. With challenging local authority budgets, it is important that those involved in highway maintenance understand how to achieve greater savings and efficiencies. The HMEP asset management e-learning Toolkit offers an excellent introduction to this area and CIHT is happy to endorse the online course as suitable CPD for members.”
Geoff Allister, from the Highways Term Maintenance Association (HTMA), added: "HTMA believes that a long term asset management approach is required to improve the condition of our roads in line with best practice.”
