Multi-phased works on the Menai Suspension Bridge, which is approaching its 200th anniversary, have been delayed until spring of next year.
The vital works were initially intended to begin in 2023, but the discovery of a potential defect in the bridge's hangars meant that the maintenance work was delayed so that an immediate replacement could be fitted.
The hangar replacement works were completed last October, which allowed for the bridge to be re-opened for the winter period.
However, due to issues with acquiring necessary licenses, procurement struggles and additional requirements, UK Highways A55 – which manages the bridge – told the Welsh Government that the works ‘are not likely to be completed’ until early 2026.
This means the project will still be taking place on the 200th anniversary on 30 January 2026.
UK Highways A55 Ltd have pledged the works will be 'completed for the summer’ of next year, so that the celebrations planned to coincide with Thomas Telford’s Birthday on 9 August 2026 can proceed unimpeded.
Rhodri Griffiths, head of place and sustainability for Carmarthenshire County Council, has stated that officials will be ‘monitoring the work closely’ via frequent site visits and regular meetings with the site team, with the aim of completing the work earlier if possible.
Mr Griffiths added: ‘I am extremely disappointed that the original programme from UK Highways A55 DBFO Ltd is now delayed.
'We were given assurances at the time that the Phase 2 works would be completed by December 2025, and I know this news will be very disappointing for the community and others. The age of the bridge and the fact it’s a critical asset to the area means that it is imperative that works are completed to the highest of standards to ensure it continues to operate for the next 200 years.’
