Pothole sends lump of concrete flying through windscreen

Police are blaming a deteriorating road surface after a lump of concrete smashed through a driver's windscreen in Essex.

The motorist was left shaken after the concrete became embedded in her windscreen while driving on the A120 near Great Bromley last Friday.

Police investigated where the 1ft square object came from following fears it had been thrown onto the road from a bridge.

But officers have now found a pothole in the road which matches the size and material of the concrete chunk.

Det Insp Leighton Hammett said: "Having looked at all the circumstances surrounding this incident the most likely explanation is that this piece of concrete was kicked up into the windscreen of the car by a passing vehicle.

“We are satisfied that there was no criminal involvement in what happened.

“We have spoken to the Highways Department and the damage to the road has been repaired."
