SIB 2016: Hear from Highways England key personnel next week

01/11/2016 | HIGHWAYS REPORTERS

Visitors to next week’s Highways SIB (Seeing is Believing) event will hear from key personnel from Highways England.

Europe’s only event for indoor showcasing of highway products as well as outdoor demonstrations in all lighting conditions is taking place at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground in Leicestershire from 9-10 November.

The event also features an ‘integrated’ conference across both days. Highways England chief executive Jim O’Sullivan will deliver a keynote address on the afternoon of 9 November and is set to provide attendees with an update on safety and innovation.

On the morning of the second day (10 November), talent specialist Charlotte Potter will deliver an address entitled ‘Making the most of apprenticeships’.

Her address will look at the work HE are doing with apprenticeships, how they are supporting early talent, how they are addressing early talent pipelines and planning for future capability holes.

As our primary event partner, Highways England’s main focus will be on how they are transforming the strategic road network through improving the environment; free-flowing roads; a safe and accessible network; and supporting economic growth.

Senior staff from a number of Highways England’s key business areas will be in attendance at the event. They will be discussing the following topics:

  • Year two of the five-year Health and Safety Plan

  • Incident prevention initiatives

  • Smart motorways

  • RIS2

  • Stakeholder engagement.

With an ambitious government target of attracting 30,000 apprentices into road and rail by 2020, this year’s event sees the introduction of an Apprenticeship/skills zone offering local students the chance to come along and find out about all the exciting opportunities that the sector has to offer. So far more than 100 civil engineering students from Liverpool John Moores University and Wolverhampton University have registered to attend the event. The zone is formed of the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT).

Roads Minister Andrew Jones will officially open the event and take questions from the audience. Attendees can also join in lively debates on road worker safety, asset management, technology, the resilience of local roads, and the future of HMEP.

Highways SIB also features two full days of live full-scale outdoor demonstrations and displays covering maintenance, safety, technology, lighting, signage and road markings.
