Local outfit bags Bristol road defect repair contract

Bristol City Council has awarded local company ETM Contractors a defect response and emergency work contract worth up to £24m, with a possible 12-year runtime.

The Bristol-based contractor is expected to undertake:

• Minor maintenance works, coated macadam patching and pothole reinstatement to carriageways and footways
• Relaying and replacing slabs, kerbs and channels
• Fixing and adjusting boxes and small signs
• Cutting and trimming trees, hedges and shrubs
• Removing obstructions from the highway
• Assisting the emergency services
• Reacting to civil contingencies which may include severe weather events and oil spills

The contract is expected to run from 1 September 2025 for an initial length of eight years until 31 August 2033, with an estimated value for this initial period of £16m.

However, Bristol has allowed for two optional two-year extensions, bringing the end date to 2037 and the total value up to £24m.

Three tenders were submitted for this contract, with each assessed according to its price (60%), quality (30%) and social value (10%).
