The London Borough of Camden has awarded public realm maintenance and improvements contracts worth a total of up to £107m to Marlborough Highways and FM Conway.
The two firms will become the council’s principal contractor for works in their half of the borough, with Marlborough covering the north and Conway covering the south.
The contracts include the maintenance and improvement of public highways, Camden Council’s estate roads, and parks, with works spanning surfacing, traffic management, street lighting, road marking, public realm projects, and more.
According to Marlborough, its five-year contract, which will commence on Saturday (1 April), is valued at approximately £5.6m a year, with an option to extend by a further three years, bringing the total value to up to £45m over the period.
The contract award notice gives the value of each contract as £53.6m.
In 2020 Camden advertised for two contractors to cover half the borough each, also for extendable five-year terms, but the following year it extended VolkerHighways’ contract covering the whole borough – valued at £12m a year – for a further two years.
Marlborough said it will conduct the new operations from its Garman Road depot, which is conveniently located just a few miles to the north of Camden in the London Borough of Haringey and is home to a fleet of high-performance plant machinery and specialist highways maintenance vehicles.
It added that in addition to the public works, it would conduct a significant series of social value initiatives in the London Borough of Camden throughout the contract term, including prioritising resident employment through the creation of local jobs and apprenticeship placements, as well as the provision of training and educational courses delivered by qualified members of staff.
Managing director Matthew Revell said: ‘We couldn’t be more excited to be working in the London Borough of Camden, and our expert team look forward to delivering a greener and cleaner environment for everyone to live, work and travel.
‘I would like to thank our friends at Camden Council for putting their trust in Marlborough, it is a privilege to serve such a beautiful and vibrant community.’
