Surrey CC outlines footpath improvement plans

Surrey County Council will improve almost 42 miles of footpaths next year.

The local authority has revealed a provisional list of hundreds of pavements that are in line to be resurfaced from April as part of the scheme that includes improving access to schools, hospitals, busy town centres and doctors’ surgeries.

Surrey CC has also identified around another 150 miles of footpaths that have been pencilled in to be overhauled over the following four years as part of the Pavement Horizon project launched by cabinet member for highways John Furey in May.

Since launching in May the scheme has given around 30 miles of footpaths a smooth new surface.

Mr Furey said: “From Sunbury to Horley and Farnham to Warlingham, we’re really getting on with the job of improving pavements, whether that’s for mums taking their kids to school, older people visiting the doctor or shoppers heading into town.

“While our budgets are stretched to the limit by rising demand for services like adult social care, aiming to overhaul the equivalent of driving from Guildford to Portsmouth next year really shows our commitment to doing the things that benefit Surrey residents day in day out.”
