Welsh roads picking up speed again

Welsh roads picking up speed again

Anglesey County Council has agreed plans to reinstate the 30mph speed limit on 22 roads, reverting them from the current 20mph restrictions.

The proposal would see the change implemented on 22 of 25 roads that originally had their speed limits lowered to 20mph.

Roads included in the speed increase are:

  • Amlwch A5025
  • Amlwch, Lon Parys to Ffordd Madyn
  • Benllech, A5025
  • Bodffordd, A5 approach
  • Bryn Du, unnamed Class 3 road
  • Bull Bay, A5025
  • Caergeiliog, A5 Bryngwran approach
  • Holyhead A5153, Parc Cybi
  • Holyhead A5154, Victoria Road
  • Llanddaniel, A5 approach
  • Llanddaniel, Llanedwen approach
  • Llanddaniel, level crossing approach
  • Llandegfan, Ffordd yr Eglwys
  • Llanfachraeth, A5025
  • Llanfaes, unnamed Class 3 road from the B5109
  • Llanfair PG A5025 near the park and ride facility
  • Llanfihangel yn Nhowyn, RAF Valley, Minffordd Road
  • Llangefni, Industrial Estate Road
  • Pentraeth, B5109 Beaumaris approach
  • Rhosmeirch, B5111 Coedana approach
  • Talwrn, Old school road (Due to Closed School)
  • Trearddur Bay, B4545 Lon St Ffraid East

The three remaining roads – Gaerwen, Lon Groes - industrial estate road, Newborough, A4080 Malltraeth approach and Rhosneigr, A4080 Llyn Maelog approach – will retain their 20mph speed limits that were introduced in 2023.

According to Nation Cymru, Cllr Douglas Fowlie, who opposed the changes, said he and fellow local councillors felt that ‘it is hard to justify using council resources, the money would be better spent on preventing speeding in the areas and maintaining the roads than moving the speed limit’.

Documents from the committee meeting noted several objections to the proposed speed limit changes, mainly focussed on driver safety and the cost involved with increasing the speed limit. Despite these objections, however, the committee voted to approve the increase for the 22 roads.
