Permanent Vehicle Restraint Systems
Founded in 1824, Hill & Smith has a long manufacturing heritage and started producing Highways Agency VRS (NPSBS) in the 1950’s. A division of Hill and Smith Infrastructure Ltd, alongside 3 other VRS leading companies, Asset VRS, Hardstaff Barriers and Varley&Gulliver, it continues to develop world class vehicle restraint systems and infrastructure products tested to international standards. The company and its robust network of distributors, offers outstanding service and technical support.
Designing and testing products to a stringent set of standards, Hill&Smith’s ethos is to take time to understand the installation constraints our clients face. Our expertise combined with our advanced technical support, enables the company to offer advice and guidance through the design, supply and installation process. One of the first companies in the UK to develop a range of independently tested highway safety barriers, Hill & Smith was also the first barrier manufacturer in the UK to create a portal that publicly made installation drawings, manuals and declarations of performance readily available to download. This portal is known to industry professionals as XTRATECH and is free to access.
Through a culture of continuous improvement across its production facility the company has achieved numerous certifications including the FORS Gold Award and the RoSPA Gold Award for accident prevention.
The product portfolio includes a comprehensive range of steel barriers, such as Flexbeam, VRS family of systems for use on highways, Brifen, the wire rope VRS used in over 30 countries worldwide, Hi-Flex (high containment systems) and all the Non-Proprietary Safety Barrier Systems. It also includes a complete suite of tested and approved transitions and end terminals.
With a range of N2 single sided and double-sided solutions, for verge and central reservations, the Flexbeam suite of systems can be installed using a variety of post foundation types to accommodate the surrounding environment.
The Hi-Flex family of H1 and H2 systems will safely contain and redirect heavy goods vehicles. With vehicle intrusion measured in accordance with the working width, engineers can install suitable products along any highway.
Tested to EN1317, the Tranzflex systems ensure a safe and compliant transition is made from one system to another thus avoiding pocketing or sheering upon impact. To allow for a safe termination, the range includes a variety of P1, P2 and P4 tested and approved end terminals, single sided and double sided. The range of ABC and Trend terminals are compliant for use across the strategic road network and local authority roads.
