National Highways has released new images of its ‘transformation’ of Junction 10 of the M6 to highlight the progress being made and the scale of the work involved.
Two new bridges, which will each carry four lanes of traffic, are now in place next to the current two-lane bridges that have been there for some 50 years.
The work is being carried out by John Sisk & Son on behalf of National Highways and Walsall Council, supported by the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership.
Work is also taking place on the approaches to the roundabout with the westbound carriageway of the Black Country Route being widened from two to three lanes from Junction 10 to Marshlands Way.
Next month, resurfacing work will be taking place along the Wolverhampton Road on the westbound approach to Junction 10, between Tempus Drive and the motorway roundabout.
A contraflow will be in place, to the east of Junction 10, from 10pm on 1 April to 6am on 7 April. National Highways said the work is likely to cause significant delays for traffic travelling west on the Wolverhampton road towards the junction and urged drivers to use alternative routes if possible, and allow additional time for journeys.
Project Manager Annie Hyett said: ‘These images illustrate the scale of the improvements we are making to tackle congestion at this busy junction and the progress that has been made.
‘Work is on track to complete the scheme before the summer.’
Ms Hyett added: ‘Unfortunately, on a project of this size there is likely to be some disruption during the roadworks but we do try to keep it to a minimum. The contraflow will mean we can get the resurfacing done in a week. Without it, we would have needed to close the road over four or five weekends to get the work completed.’
