M6 junction 19 project moves a step closer

The next stage of major works to the M6 will move a step closer next week, when public consultation over a plan that could cost up to £50 million to upgrade junction 19 draws to a close.

An exhibition has been running with an information exhibition at the Curzon Cinema at Toft Road, Knutsford, but this ends on September 23.

Highways England Project Manager Irene Ofei said: “This scheme builds on our investment in the area, with the M6 smart motorway and the A556 improvement scheme both currently underway.

“The changes will improve safety and journey times through the junction for all road users and will provide better links for residents and businesses to key roads in the area. We will also improve access for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.”

There are two options being proposed in the consultation. Option A proposes creating a road on a bridge over the junction to provide a better link between the M6 and A556. Option B comprises extra lanes on the existing roundabout to increase capacity, and new traffic lights.

Following the public consultation, a final plan will be developed and announced and the public given another chance to comment.

Highways England estimates that the project will cost between £25 million and £50 million, which could take investment on the M6 up to more than £350 million.

Costain is currently taking place on an £192 million road to link the M56 and the M6 and bypass the existing A556.

A joint venture between Kier and Carillion is also working on a £129.5 million scheme to provide a section of smart motorway between junctions 16 and 19 of the M6.

Work on the junction 19 project on the M6 is due to start on site by spring 2020.
