Surface dressing work starts across Warwickshire

Roads across Warwickshire are being given new surface dressings as Warwickshire County Council commences its annual improvement programme.

The £2m programme involves the application of a bitumen binder and stone chippings to the road surface to help prolong its serviceable life.

More than 370 sites, totalling 200km, are to be treated which include all categories of road from ‘A’ roads to residential cul-de-sacs.

The programme is due to be completed by September.

Tony Iwanikiw, Warwickshire County Council’s Southern Area Programme and Works Delivery Manager, said: “Drivers should keep their speed at 10mph or less through areas being treated with surface dressing. We advise this speed to help keep our workers safe and to minimise the hazard of flying chippings picked up by tyres.”

Balfour Beatty, the county council’s new highway maintenance contractor, is carrying out the work.

Cllr Peter Butlin, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Highways and Transport, said: “Uniquely, the contract will incorporate the delivery of some highway services for Coventry City Council – commencing with surface dressing works where 40 roads in Coventry will be treated this summer in conjunction with Warwickshire’s programme.

“The annual surface dressing will cost effectively extend the life of our roads, and the delivery of these works through this unique contract provides good value for money for the taxpayer.”
