An experimental scheme to improve traffic flow on the A20 Townwall Street in Dover is now underway.
The gap in the central reservation on the A20 will be closed at its junction with Russell Street, preventing right hand turns from Russell Street onto the A20.
The traffic signals at the junction will be turned off with traffic emerging from Russell Street giving way to traffic on the A20.
Kevin Bown, Highways Agency Asset Manager said: “We are committed to safe and reliable journeys on this vital route through Dover and have been working closely with Kent County Council to find the best way to improve traffic flow.
"By closing the gap in the central reservation, preventing right hand turns, and turning off the traffic signals, we can keep traffic flowing better on the A20 Townwall Street.
“With less stationary vehicles at the traffic signals it is anticipated that this will help reduce emissions and improve the air quality in the area, which is part of an Air Quality Management Area.
“The changes will be in place for 18 months during which time we will assess the impact on traffic flow. After this time we will evaluate the trial to consider making the change permanent.”
The traffic signals have been out of operation for some weeks due to damage caused in an incident in November which also resulted in the gap being closed for safety reasons.
Preparatory work for the trial also included painting new road markings and providing additional signage as well as installing a barrier in the gap to replace the cones.
