Update on Londonderry road improvements

04/12/2013 | HIGHWAYS REPORTERS

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has set out Roads Service’s progress on investment totalling £8million for road improvement and maintenance schemes in Derry, Northern Ireland this year.

Regarding the A6 dualling scheme between Londonderry and Dungiven, including the Dungiven bypass, the Minister confirmed that officials are in the final stages of drafting the Departmental Statement for his consideration. This will be in response to the Inspector’s Report on the public inquiry held late last year.

The Minister (pictured) said: “The signalisation of the junction of Northland Road and Springtown Road in the city has been completed at a cost of approximately £300,000. The scheme brings improvements for pedestrians and cyclists and reduces delays for motorists at this busy intersection.”

Speaking at a recent meeting between Roads Service and Derry City Council, divisional roads manager, Deidre Mackle highlighted a number of improvement and maintenance schemes completed or being progressed. She said: “The provision of 288 metres of vehicle restraint system, combined with footway resurfacing on Temple Road, Strathfoyle, along the edge of Enagh Lough, has recently been completed and will improve safety for vehicles and pedestrians along this route.

“I can also confirm that a scheme to provide a footway and local carriageway widening from Park Village to link to St Marys Church on Altinure Road is now programmed to commence this financial year.”

Almost 10 kilometres of carriageway resurfacing has been completed in the Derry City Council area this year representing an investment of £1.45million including significant lengths at B524 Lone Moor Road, B69 Baranailt Road, C578 Bishop Street, C504 Carmoney Road, C508 Ardmore Road and C568 Haw Road.

Over £275,000 was spent on footway resurfacing in the council area including stretches on Academy Road, Long Tower Court, Blucher Street and Ballyagard Estate while work is underway to resurface a number of footways in the Bond Street area of the City. Work to replace existing vehicle retention rails with masonry wall is also underway at Lecky Road Flyover.
