VolkerFitzpatrick has been appointed to lead the £14m refurbishment of the A13 River Lea Crossing (RLC) in East London.
The contractor is undertaking essential maintenance and upgrades at the crossing, which is a vital six-lane bridge originally built in the 1930s, spanning 60 metres and featuring a two-pinned arch with 16 riveted steel ribs.
The structure is a key component of the A13, the second busiest route in and out of London, accommodating approximately 40 million vehicles annually.
Diyal Nonis, operations drector - infrastructure at VolkerFitzpatrick, said: 'The upgrade works will provide a vital step towards reducing long-term disruption and will significantly improve the infrastructure for decades to come.'
Strengthening works will be carried out both below and above the bridge deck concurrently.
VolkerFitzpatrick’s was appointed by Road Management Services (RMS) and started on site in August, with steelwork replacement and repainting beneath the bridge.
Above deck works will include waterproofing, road resurfacing, and the installation of new bridge parapets to enhance safety for all users.
Traffic management measures 'will be carefully phased, ensuring that at least two lanes in both directions remain open at all times,' VolkerFitzpatrick said.
The project team is collaborating with key stakeholders, including the Canal and River Trust, the Environmental Agency, the Port of London Authority, and the Marine Management Organisation, to ensure the work is conducted with minimal environmental impact.
