Walking and cycling plans launched by Welsh government

Plans to make walking and cycling the preferred method of travelling for shorter journeys in Wales have been published by Transport Minister Edwina Hart.

An Active Travel Action Plan for Wales sets out how legislation, infrastructure and behaviour change can be used together to ensure active travel becomes part of everyday life.

Mrs Hart said: “Increasing levels of walking and cycling offers many health and social benefits. We know that most people in Wales currently make no or very few walking and cycling journeys. This plan sets out how we can achieve our ambition of making walking and cycling part of everyday life through a culture change, both within organisations, and among individuals, as well as action to reduce barriers to active travel.”

The Action Plan focuses on five interlinked areas of leadership and governance, legislation, infrastructure, behaviour change, skills and training. An annual progress report will be published to monitor targets in the plan.
