M25 works progressing well

Schemes to upgrade the northern and southern sections of the M25 are progressing well with sections of ‘smart motorway’ set to go live from spring 2014.  

They are being introduced on the M25 between junctions 5 and 7 on the Kent/Surrey border and between junctions 23 and 27 in Hertfordshire. Smart motorways use technology to manage the flow of traffic to improve journey reliability and reduce congestion while maintaining safety.

John Martin, senior project manager at the Highways Agency, said: “Work to upgrade these two sections of the M25 has progressed well and thanks to good weather and efficiency savings we are some 12 months ahead of schedule on the southern section.

“We expect main construction work on that section to be completed in early 2014, followed by a period of testing and commissioning the technology before final completion with road users benefitting from improved journey reliability and reduced congestion from spring 2014. The first phase of the northern section is on schedule to be complete at the same time.

The first phase of the northern section scheme is between junction 23, South Mimms and junction 25, Cheshunt. Once this section is complete, construction work will begin on the second phase between junction 25 and 27, Epping.

The second phase of the northern scheme is due for final completion by late 2014.

The upgrades include new variable message signs providing traffic information, emergency refuge areas, concrete safety barriers and a new road surface.
