Average speed cameras lead to zero accident closures on Orwell Bridge

The number of motorists caught speeding the A14's Orwell Bridge near Ipswich has halved since the introduction of average speed cameras in July, and since their switch-on there have been no bridge-closing accidents there.

The Ipswich Star reports that during the first month the Jenoptik ANPR system was in operation, 1,699 motorists were caught breaking the limit, but that fell to 839 in October.

Highways England says there have been no incidents of the bridge being closed because of an accident since the new limit was introduced.

The cameras were introduced to enforce the new speed limit introduced last spring.  That was brought in to cut the number of accidents on the bridge, especially those which forced its closure and lead traffic jams along the alternative route through the centre of Ipswich.
