A new type of expansion joint never used before in the UK will be installed on the A14 River Nene viaduct between junctions 12 and 13.
The new joint will feature a quick release system that allows for overnight replacement should the need arise, reducing disruption from any future works. It also features noise-reducing plates.
The installation is expected to take three months. However, National Highways said that in order to keep the road open as much as possible, 'innovative bridging plates are being installed spanning the excavated area, which can be raised to allow access for overnight working and lowered for traffic to flow in the daytime'.
National Highways project manager, Simon Wagstaff, said: ‘The current joint was installed 25 years ago and has reached the end of its serviceable life. These joints prevent stress build-up and potential cracking or damage so it’s vital they are well maintained and replaced when necessary.
‘For the safety of our workforce and road users, we will need to close the road but will mostly do that at night when we know traffic numbers are lower.’
The installation is expected to start on 29 August, with initial work taking place on the eastbound carriageway and then moving to the westbound before the projected completion date in December this year.
