The report says that the standards should be responsible for, conducting research and early-stage technical scoping, engaging and directing existing knowledge on CAV-related topics from national projects, demonstrators and test beds, building consensus and drafting standards to overcome critical market barriers, engaging with relevant stakeholders, both in the UK and internationally, feeding into and providing support to national mirror committees to CEN, ETSI, ISO and IEC and also becoming a globally-recognised source of best practice and guidance.
"Vehicles are incorporating more on-board technology, such as safety and navigation features, and dealing with greater levels of connectivity than ever before," BSI says. "As vehicle systems become increasingly centralized and software-dependent, boundaries between drivers, vehicles and systems are blurring. With the move towards more connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), the need to engineer and manage more complex interfaces between systems has increased. The development of highly automated vehicles will require new safety and testing procedures, and the development of connected vehicles brings with it new risks from cyber threats. New technical demands on the physical and digital infrastructure will also be seen in order to meet the challenges and opportunities associated with CAVs.
"The central findings of Connected and autonomous vehicles ' A UK standards strategy, highlight that standardisation is required to help overcome barriers associated with CAV development, such as interoperability or public acceptance issues, while helping accelerate the deployment of the technologies, concepts and models for the industry," it continues. "Further opportunities exist to establish a lead position globally through international standards development where it complements the UK's relative technological capabilities."
BSI says it will be working with industry to take forward the priority areas for standardization and key recommendations of the report.
