Facelift for Croydon’s streets

06/06/2014 | HIGHWAYS REPORTERS

EM Highway Services is working with Croydon Council to transform a number of congested roads in the town.

The street maintenance programme, which is called Streetscene, will see EM implement one-day road closures for 10 weeks, carrying out a range of services that will simultaneously minimise disruption to local residents and passing motorists.

Carriageway and footway repairs, gully cleaning, road marking, street cleansing and street lighting maintenance will all be carried out on roads that have been identified as the most difficult to carry out planned maintenance due to the number of parked vehicles.

This second phase of the scheme follows the success of the first, completed across the borough at the start of the year.

Residents of the targeted areas will soon be notified. For one day only, Croydon Council and EM ask all residents to park their cars elsewhere during the day of the works, allowing all suppliers to carry out their duties.

Councillor Stuart Collins, cabinet member with responsibility for Clean, Green Croydon, said: “Streetscene is an integral part of the council’s intention to see the borough brought up to spick-and-span condition.

“In addition to seeing their streets being given a deep clean, residents will benefit from cleared gullys, repairs to street lighting and road and footway surfaces, and repainted road markings.”

Richard O’Keeffe, contract manager of EM Highway Services, added: “The first project of this kind was a great success. But that would not have been possible without a substantial and productive collaborative effort between EM, Croydon Council and our supply chain partners; Flowline, WJ Linkline, RTP and Marshall Surfacing.

“Working together, we ensured that all tasks were carried out on time, minimising disruption to residents, who were pleased to see their roads being maintained. We hope the next project runs as smoothly, but to do so, we require the cooperation of residents to move their vehicles so that works can be carried out effectively.”
