ITS vital for temporary VMS effectiveness - opinion

The owner of the mobile variable message signs provider MVMS says any installation must come with ITS technology for it to be properly effective.

Company MD John McAteer explained his thought process in an interview with Smart Highways editor Paul Hutton at Intertraffic in Amsterdam.

Paul pointed out to him that the company branding on its stand highlighted "Mobile ITS".  McAteer explained, "the scope is for all ITS equipment that is portable".  All his kit needs to be solar powered, he said, and includes VMS, CCTV, radar signs and lighting towers.

"We've always continued development," he continued.  "We looked the equipment could do.  We developed a system for construction works where you had temporary applications so our portable signs were perfect for that sort of project.  We have developed an ITS system using portable sensor trailers, radar, microwave and bluetooth and we collect the data and have the software as well."
